Why do you need a router sled?

Sometimes called a “Slab Flattening Jig”, a router sled allowed you to flatten boards and lumber that is too big for a jointer or a planer.

In my shop, I do not have a jointer, and my planer is limited to 13.” The CCW Router Sled allows me to flatten and even thickness lumber up to 25” wide (Or 50” wide if you order the 60” crossbars). A dedicated machine that could do that would be $20,000 and would take up about one bay of my three-car garage shop. My router sled is neatly stored in my rafters when not in use and accomplishes the same job as large industrial equipment (albeit, slower).

Check out the video below where I remove the horrible twist and thickness-plane a pecan board that would have been unusable without a router sled.

My CCW Router Sled Set Up

I custom ordered my sled with 72” long rails and 36” wide. I did this so I could set it up on my Paulk Total Station to flatten slabs. I’ve since found it’s a little too narrow for my normal needs as 26” is about the widest slab I can flatten.

The great thing is you can order additional crossbars, so now I have a set of 60” crossbars that I can swap out in about 3 minutes when I have a large table to flatten.

As for the length, the design of the rails allows you to “leapfrog” each other so you theoretically have an unlimited length (as long as you have a flat table). I mounted my rails to a homemade cleat that easily attaches to my workbench.

What Router Do You Need?

If you have a 1/2” Collet corded router with a plunge base you probably are good to go. I REALLY like my cheap Skill 14amp Router (Amazon Affiliate Link). It came with a fixed base that I leave in my router plate (router table) and now I leave the plunge base permanently installed on my Clean Cut Woodworking Slab Flattening Sled.

Router Bits and Collet Extensions

You will need a router collect extension for your router sled. They’re all about the same and this is the one I have. Wolfride 1/2 Shank Router Collet Extention (Amazon Affiliate Link)

As for bits, you can buy some really expensive bits with removable carbide teeth. But I’ve gone with inexpensive bits. This way I don’t cry if I hit a nail or an embedded rock.

This 2” Yonico Surfacing Bit (Amazon Affiliate Link) is about $20 and lasts a long time, provided you don’t find any nails or other surprises.

Great Tools Make Woodworking Easier and More Fun

I’m a big believer that good, high-quality tools make woodworking more enjoyable, faster, and safer. The Clean Cut Woodworking Router Sled is a tool that is very high-quality, easy to use, and allows you to safely flatten large lumber without industrial-sized (and prices equipment)
